Profits Over People – Boycott Wal-Mart?

A couple weeks ago I noticed one of my Facebook friends re-posting a ‘Boycott Wal-Mart‘ message. She posted this lame message every day until I finally unfriended her. Ok, I get it. Your panties are in a twist because the corporate giant buys cheap imports and forces competition, or they pay employees less than you think they should. Or is it the lack of employee benefits, or hours, or perhaps you think the door greeter should get a comphy chair.

Whatever the case, let me hold in my initial “shut up stupid” response and try to put things into a little perspective. First of all, the whole notion of corporate ‘Profits Over People‘ is evil and we deserve better is nonsense. I’d love to see a corporation that doesn’t put profits first. I guess the bloggers and feel-good cry babies should have a voice in how to run the company holding the top spot of the Fortune 500. I’m sure they could do a much better job running things.

Am I pro Wal-Mart? Not at all. Here’s the way I see it…

First of all, boycotting Wal-Mart can ONLY hurt my friends and neighbors working there. Second, when I need something for the house and I run to the closest retail store, Kmart (gag), I almost always leave there disgusted that I have to go all the way to Wal-Mart. I don’t have any love or hate feelings for Wal-Mart. It is what it is, and in Wal-Mart’s case that’s a huge corporation earning big profits… Period!

The same with Kmart, except Kmart sucks big time. <- My expert analysis

What do you think? Don’t be shy, let me have it!

Yes, profits are always first, but companies should strive for a good balance. I blogged about this a bit… http://1trashsociety.wordpress.com/2010/08/14/superstores-superhoards-day-79/

Hi Sis, you go girl… The same people probably sit around wondering why a new car cost thirty thousand dollars. Common sense isn’t all that common.

Okay, so I have to agree with my brother, as much as it pains me. lol If anyone thinks they are shopping at a store that “cares” about them. They are in for a real shocker. Umm, people start business to make money and quite frankly I have to say as a mother of 4 kids who eat like truck drivers (no offense, lol) I aprreaciate the low prices. Not to mention the hundreds of people per store who actually have a job. So yeah, until I’m rich, I’m shopping at Wal Mart, Kmart, Aldi, Save a Lot and all the other discount stores people with money to burn want to boycott.

Hi Anne, it’s been a long time, nice to see you. No, you can’t get rid of me that easy :)

I agree, if you don’t like the store, shop elsewhere. I’m can’t stand our local McDonald’s for the same reasons. Kmart too lol

I just got tired of seeing that same banner every time I logged onto Facebook. It’s no different than a spammers ad over and over to me. That’s what I should have blogged about. Maybe next time

For a brief moment I thought it was me, but then I realized you didn’t unfriend me and I didn’t annoy people with any boycott Wal-mart message. I have decided to no longer shop at Wal-mart since I am always annoyed while there and the last time I was there I was ignored by both my cashier and one of the greeters. I cannot support a store that does not care about its customers.

BUT… business is business and as long as we want to pay little for the things we buy then Wal-mart, KMart, etc. will continue to sell us cheap crap, pay crappy wages, etc. It’s really just our fault, not theirs.
